Rose Levy Beranbaum - Biography

November 2011

Rose Levy Beranbaum has been called the “Diva of Desserts” and “the most meticulous cook who ever lived”—and there’s good reason. Her cookbooks—from The Cake Bible in 1988 to her most recent, Rose’s Heavenly Cakes in 2010 (both IACP award winners)—are the best combination of thorough and accessible. Having them on hand is almost as good as having Beranbaum in the kitchen with you (almost).

Beranbaum loves to bake, whether it’s cookies, bread, or cakes, she’s got the cookbook (and the award) for it. Rose’s Christmas Cookies was the 1990 winner of the James Beard Best Book in the Dessert and Baking Category. The Pie and Pastry Bible, published in 1998, received many kudos including: Food & Wine Books “Best of the Best: The Best Recipes from the Best Cookbooks of the Year” and Coffee & Cuisine “Best Cookbook” award. And Beranbaum’s The Bread Bible, was the 2003 winner of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in the Best Bread Book Category—and it was listed by Publisher's Weekly and Food & Wine as one of the top ten books of 2003, and by Fine Cooking as one of the top 12. It’s no surprise Beranbaum can call her cookbooks “bibles” with impunity. They’re as close as baking instruction gets to scripture.

Beyond the heaving bookshelf of her collected works and awards, Beranbaum has been a Contributing Editor to Food Arts Magazine. She’s also contributed to The Washington Post, Fine Cooking, Bride's, Reader's Digest, and Hemispheres. And even if you haven’t seen her on one of her many book jackets, or on her website, www.realbakingwithrose.com, you’ve probably seen her on one of many major networks. Beranbaum’s brought her baking expertise to The Today Show, The Early Show, Martha Stewart, Charlie Rose, The Food Network, and PBS. And when she’s not writing, editing recipes, offering advice or stories on her blog, or making a television appearance, we can only assume—and it’s a pretty safe bet—Beranbaum is baking.
