The 10th Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party June 9 & 10, 2012

New York City's ultimate barbecue and live music extravaganza is fast approaching, returning to Madison Square Park and surrounding streets on Saturday & Sunday, June 9th & 10th. Along with serving up 'cue from the country's best pitmasters, the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party will be hosting free seminars and demonstrations to bring you expert advice for your own backyard barbecue. Experts from Southern Living, Cooking Light, and Real Simple will be joined on the Ikea Cooking Stage by top chefs from some of the South's most acclaimed restaurants, including the 2012 James Beard Award Best Chef: South winner Chris Hastings (Hot & Hot Fish Club), Sean Brock (Husk, McCrady's), Tyler Brown (Capitol Grille), and John Currence (City Grocery Group). This year, the festivities will also include screenings of two Southern Foodways Alliance documentaries ("Helen's Bar-B-Q" & "Madison Square Pork") in celebration of the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party's 10th Anniversary.

Admission is free to the weekend's cooking demos, culinary discussions and documentary screenings. The Ikea Cooking Stage and SFA Peep Show are located on 25th Street. The full lineup of seminars and sponsor demos is below (unless otherwise noted, each seminar is 45 minutes long).


SATURDAY, JUNE 9

11:00 AM - 6:00 PM - A FILM RETROSPECTIVE [SFA Peep Show]
Joe York, filmmaker for the Southern Foodways Alliance at the University of Mississippi, will premiere two new barbecue shorts. "Helen's Bar-B-Q": An homage to Helen Turner, the Brownsville, TN, pitmaster who is one of the few women in the business. "Madison Square Pork": A retrospective and celebration of the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party at 10 years.

11:00 AM - HELLMANN'S CHEF NORMAJEAN LONGFIELD [Ikea Cooking Stage]
Come see Hellmann's Chef Normajean Longfield demonstrate how to make the perfect side for your summer barbecue - Pasta Salad with Vegetables using Hellmann's Mayonnaise Dressing with Olive Oil. Samples will be available to try.

12:00 PM - EASY IDEAS FOR SUMMER STAPLES [Ikea Cooking Stage]
Hot dogs and green salads are must-haves at any summertime gathering. Allie Lewis Clapp, Food Director at Real Simple, demonstrates some of the tastiest ideas for both at your next backyard bash.


1:00 PM - EMBERS WITH A HEART [Ikea Cooking Stage]
Join pals Chef Tyler Brown of Nashville, TN and Chef Sean Brock of Charleston, SC as they warm you up with southern culinary traditions and plenty of southern charm. On the menu: the advantages of cooking over embers, how to round out your meal with foraged greens, and a demo of their dish, BBQ Lamb Heart with Pokeweed Fritters and a Pickled Ramp and Radish Slaw.

2:00 PM - SIGNATURE SOUTHERN DISHES [Ikea Cooking Stage]
Join Chef Norman King as he demonstrates how to prepare one of Southern Living's signature summer dishes: Brown Sugar Pork Chops with Peach Barbecue Sauce. He will also share his secrets for finishing off your summer barbecue menu with two of his favorite sides including Heirloom Tomato Salad and Lady Pea Salsa.

4:00 PM - READY, SET, GRILL! [Ikea Cooking Stage]
Some of the season's best and easiest recipes come sizzling off your grill. Chef Billy Strynkowski demonstrates two Cooking Light summer favorites: Grilled Shrimp with Mango and Red Onion Relish and to-die-for Deviled Eggs.

5:00 PM - SEAFOOD WITH SOUL [Ikea Cooking Stage]
2012 James Beard Award Best Chef: South winner and chef and owner of Hot & Hot Fish Club in Birmingham, Alabama, Chris Hastings is a passionate advocate for Southern fare and locally-sourced
products - especially Alabama Gulf Seafood. Come watch him prepare BBQ Grilled Alabama Head On Shrimp with Hot and Hot
