Berryhill Baja Grill Wins Big At The Houston Livestock Show And Rodeo
Known for its "Seriously Fresh Mex" with a uniquely different approach to traditional Mexican cuisine, Berryhill Baja Grill, a Houston-based chain, proved its quality reputation and creativity at the 2010 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, winning two impressive awards: First Place in Best Fried Food and Grand Champion of Best Booth Decoration. This was Berryhill's first year participating in the highly regarded Rodeo Show, which took place from March 2-21 at Reliant Park, and is the worlds' largest and greatest livestock show and rodeo, attended by over 2 million fans.
Berryhill beat out its commendable vendor competition in the Golden Buckle Food Awards for Best Fried Food with one of its signature dishes, The Original Fish Taco. Served with red cabbage, special sauce and cilantro in double-wrapped freshly made corn tortillas, it was certainly a rodeo crowd-pleaser! Berryhill also showcased a variety of its Baja-inspired, fresh-from-scratch items, including its Taquitos, Pork Tacos, Chimichangas, and hand-rolled Tamales, which were prepared in its demonstration booth for all of the attendees to see.
Berryhill's Award-Winning Booth for Best Decoration was a remarkable 25 by 30 foot modular wooden structure, the largest at the Show, built by hand by Berryhill's creative team. Berryhill incorporated custom details from its store decorations, such as aged tin panels, rustic Mexican star pendants, and vintage photos of Walter Berryhill. The south-of-the-border look also featured palm trees and surfboards (see photos on page two).
"We were proud to participate for the first time in this year's Rodeo and come away with two great awards," said Berryhill CEO Jeff Anon. "We look forward to participating again in the upcoming years and winning more credible honors."
Berryhill currently has fourteen locations in Texas and three in Cancun, Mexico, and has been recognized by The New York Times as "worth seeking out." Berryhill has received many accolades for its fresh mex cuisine, including "The Best Fish Taco Ever!" by Zagat's National Survey, and Best Fish Taco and Tamale in Houston by the Houston Press. Berryhill has also been crowned Best Mexican Restaurant and Best Margaritas by AOL City Guide.
Berryhill is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a full bar. Hours of operation vary for each location. For more information, visit www.berryhillbajagrill.com
About Berryhill Baja Grill
Since 1928, Berryhill tamales have been a Houston tradition. Starting with a bicycle and push cart, Walter Berryhill vended his tasty tamales along the posh River Oaks street corners until he retired in 1960. For over 20 years, his tamale recipe and cart sat in a warehouse. Then in 1993, the first Berryhill restaurant was born as a little taqueria, lovingly bearing his name Berryhill Tamales and Tacos. In 1997, The Anon Group purchased the company and began the transformation from a "Mom & Pop" business to a restaurant company called Berryhill Baja Grill. In 1998, a second Berryhill opened in the heart of the city's Galleria area. In 2002, Berryhill opened its first international location in Calgary, Alberta (which has since closed), and in 2009, it launched its first location in Mexico in Cancun's Toluca International Airport. The company plans to continue growing its reputable brand with more franchises nationwide and internationally. Berryhill's signature tamales are still served the traditional way, steamed in the husk; served in five varieties - beef, chicken, pork, bean and the ever popular spinach and corn.
