Bill Madden, Businessman And Beer Expert

Americans love to drink beer. In fact, we average around 81.6 liters of beer consumption per person, per year. Many men around the country would love to be considered a beer expert, but few hold that title. Even fewer are known as both a beer expert and a businessman who has turned his passion for the brew into a lucrative business venture. Bill Madden, a local businessman, is one of the few men who get to wear both titles, and he does so with pride.

"There's just so much to love about the science and art of brewing beer," explains Bill Madden, the chief executive officer and executive brewer at Mad Fox Brewing Company (www.madfoxbrewing.com). "The more I learn about the industry, the more I know that brewing beer is where my passion lies, I decided to find a way to capitalize on it."

While some people have home beer-brewing kits and play around with various recipes, Madden decided to get serious about it. In 1995, he graduated from the Master Brewers Program at the University of California-Davis. Since that time he has been putting his skills at both brewing and business to good use, opening and operating seven brewpub locations in the Washington, D.C. area. His most recent venture is Mad Fox Brewing Company, located in Falls Church.

Mad Fox, an upscale English-style gastro brewpub, offers a line of in-house brewed beers, including British, Belgian, and German styles, using a 15-barrel Premier Stainless brewing system. The restaurant also offers a 63-foot-long bar which showcases their 7-10 standard, house-brewed beers on tap, along with a selection of rotating seasonal brews and ever changing cask selections. The Mad Fox menu features a variety of foods that are chef-inspired and made from locally grown and seasonal produce, as well as locally raised meats.

Bill Madden's brewing efforts have received national acclaim through the Brewers Association's Great American Beer Festival, as well as the Chicago Real Ale Festival in the past. Recently two Mad Fox beers were honored at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival: the Kellerbier K�lsch, which won a Gold Medal, and the English Summer Ale, which won the Bronze.

When it comes to living one's passion and being successful in business, Bill Madden is a local man who has achieved success in both areas. As a renowned beer expert and successful restaurant proprietor, he is living proof that both can be achieved.

"I am thrilled to be able to do what I do," adds Madden. "And if I can help people enjoy a night out by having a great beer and meal, then it makes it that much sweeter. There's nothing I'd rather be doing than brewing."

Mad Fox Brewing Company is located in Falls Church, at 444 W. Broad Street, where free parking is offered in the parking lot below the brewpub. Mad Fox beers are brewed in-house in their 15-barrel Premier Stainless brewing system. Due to the freshness and demand, available brews vary. Weekly events are offered, including Tuesday Tappings, live music on Thursdays and Saturdays, and Trivia Tryst on Sundays. They also offer event hosting for parties of 12 to over 300 people.
