California Restaurants Expected To Add More Than 30,000 Jobs During Summer Months

California's restaurants expect to add 30,400 jobs this summer, a 2.9 percent increase over the summer of 2009, according to projections released by the National Restaurant Association. As the second largest private-sector employer in California, the restaurant industry will play a vital role in the economic recovery of communities throughout the state.

"This data confirms the crucial role restaurants play in our communities: creating quality jobs and providing opportunities for Californians to climb the economic ladder in these challenging times," said Jot Condie, president + CEO of the California Restaurant Association. "It's important to keep in mind that every $1 spent in California's restaurants generates an additional $1.34 in sales for the state's economy."

As of March 2010, restaurants employed 1,040,300 Californians in a wide variety of positions. The National Restaurant Association expects this number to reach 1,070,700 over the summer months. The new jobs will bring income to working families while generating much-needed revenues for state and local governments.

"Restaurants continue to be a source of entrepreneurial energy and culinary creativity throughout California," Condie said. "The California Restaurant Association will continue to work with elected officials, community leaders and restaurateurs to maintain California's reputation as an undisputed leader of restaurant industry."
