Hospitality Companies Team Up On Innovative Human Resources Program

Majestic Hospitality Group of Los Angeles and Ascend Training Solutions of Culver City, have co-developed a personality profile and benchmarking program to help curb ever-rising human resources costs in the hospitality industry.

With an average training cost of $66,000 per new employee, unprecedented numbers of unqualified applicants for skilled jobs and job turnover setting record highs, a system that streamlines the employment process to save time and money is a boon to busy hoteliers and human resources professionals.

Based on the "four temperaments theory" which originated with Hippocrates in 400 B.C., the program effectively categorize job applicants into one of five distinctive personality types-each with a defined pattern of talent and character traits.

Points are then calculated to create a chart, which allows an interviewer to direct questions and make an evaluation based on traits in evidence from the profile, in order to determine where the applicant might be a good fit for the organization. A team member who is a good "fit" means lower costs in training and lower rates of employee turnover.

The program also employs a "benchmark" system which allows the interviewer to compare the applicant to an established set of criteria for a specific position. The benchmarking process is designed to allow an organization to hire the "diamond in the rough" employee-one who resembles the person who fits the company culture like a glove.

Benchmarks were established by interviewing top performing professionals in hotels, restaurants and other relevant businesses. Their responses were used to model the profile of the type of person who is most likely to succeed.

Since not every applicant is ready for the demanding environment of the hospitality industry, the system gives employers increased ability to find and hires those who best fit the position, department, and company. Applicants will find the personality profiling system less stressful and intimidating than other testing methods, since it has been designed to be substantially less invasive, while still providing more robust results.
