Chavez Brings Fresh Voice and New Perspective to Sacramento Institution
(Sacramento, CA; October 10, 2014) – The Kitchen Restaurant and Selland Family Restaurants in Sacramento are pleased to announce the appointment of David Chavez as the new Executive Chef at The Kitchen. Chavez brings over a decade of restaurant experience to the talented, family-run team as well as a passionate commitment to the local farm relationships that are at the heart of any dinner at The Kitchen.
Chavez, who joined The Kitchen team in June 2014 as part of an ongoing focus on hiring up-and-coming talent, has a degree from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Austin, TX. Following graduation he returned to his hometown of El Paso and began his professional cooking career at James Beard nominated Café Central. After working under the tutelage of Chef Armando Pomales, Chavez struck out for what ended up being a five-plus year relationship with Thomas Keller Restaurant Group spanning the country with stops at Bouchon Bistro in Las Vegas, Bouchon Bakery in New York City and Bouchon in Beverly Hills, CA.
Initially, it was the draw to be closer to the farms that supplied the food in his kitchen that drew Chavez to Sacramento. With the goal of finding a family-friendly environment to raise his young daughter while not losing the momentum of his emerging career, Chavez sought out an opportunity with Selland Family Restaurants. Impressed by the group’s strong legacy of incredible service and hospitality, Chavez was immediately attracted to the idea of working at The Kitchen. The Selland family’s key role in conceptualizing Sacramento’s Farm to Fork brand identity and championing the local agriculture scene that defines the region’s food scene only further convinced him that The Kitchen was the ideal next step for him both personally and professionally.
