Mitchell Davis, Executive Vice President Of The James Beard Foundation To Speak At Tedx Manhattan "changing The Way We Eat" On January 21, 2012
Mitchell Davis, Executive Vice President of the James Beard Foundation, will speak at the second annual TEDxManhattan "Changing the Way We Eat" in New York City on January 21 at the Times Center. This independently organized, one-day event licensed by TED aims to explore the issues, impacts and innovations happening in the US food system as we shift to a more sustainable way of eating and farming as well as to help create connections between different areas of the food movement. The Glynwood Institute for Sustainable Food and Farming is the lead sponsor for "Changing the Way We Eat."
Though fundamental to food, the topic of taste is often left out of conversation about our food system. Complicated by issues of subjectivity, power, and class, a focus on taste may nevertheless provide a filter through which we can make better decisions about how and where we produce food, how we distribute and store it, how we market and prepare it, and what policies we enact to ensure a better, more equal, and more delicious future.
The day includes a world-class line-up of inspiring speakers from all disciplines of the sustainable food world, including:
- Patty Cantrell, Organizer, Regional Food Solutions
- Marianne Cufone, Executive Director, Recirculating Farms Coalition
- Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food & Water Watch
- Howard Hinterthuer, Co-founder, Organic Therapy Program
- Michelle Hughes, Director of GrowNYC's New Farmer Development Project
- Fred Kirschenmann, Distinguished Fellow, Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, Iowa State University
- Dr. Robert Lawrence, Center for a Livable Future Professor, Professor of Environmental Health Sciences, Health Policy, and International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
- Paul Lightfoot, Chief Executive Officer, BrightFarms
- Kerry McLean, Director of Community Development and Green Cart Program at WHED
- Gary Oppenheimer, Founder, AmpleHarvest.org
- Wayne Pacelle, President & CEO, The Humane Society of the United States
- Cara Rosaen, Co-Founder, Real Time Farms
- Urvashi Rangan, Director of Consumer Safety and Sustainability Group Consumers Union
- Dr. David Wallinga, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives.
