Northeast Flavor Named One Of Top Ten New Magazines Of 2011
Northeast FLAVOR, New England's regional food and wine magazine, was named one of the nation's best ten new magazines of 2011 by MediaSource/ Library Journal.
Out of a field of nearly 250 new publications, Northeast FLAVOR rose to the top of the ranks based on analysis by one of magazine publishing's most respected sources.
Describing it as one of the "10 shining lights" within magazine publishing, MediaSource maintains that "Despite ... stiff competition from online media, the magazine business continues to chug along via the power of creativity."
In honoring it and a handful of other publications from around the country, Library Journal's editors described Northeast FLAVOR as:
"Part travel, part cooking, and part lifestyle publication, the appropriately titled Northeast FLAVOR provides an appealing and vividly colorful tour through many paths to enjoying New England foods. It has features on expected topics like maple syrup, cranberries, lobster bakes and dairy farms, but much content is less predictable, such as recipes for beets, healthier meatloaf, and New England strawberries. The recipes, accessible to casual cooks, should also appeal to foodies. . . it's appropriate for food lovers everywhere."
After careful research, Northeast FLAVOR publisher Spencer Smith and editor Jean Kerr became convinced that a magazine focused on the culinary traditions, native ingredients and regional chefs of the northeast would appeal to New England consumers, and those with a connection to the region. So far, their hunch has played out.
The first issue of Northeast FLAVOR debuted in 2010, and the quarterly rapidly gained momentum, with initial newsstand sales coming in at twice what was projected. In fact, Northeast FLAVOR outsells national competitors like Bon Appetit on retail shelves within the region. It is available in more than 1,200 newsstand outlets throughout the Northeast, in all six New England states, and in parts of New York state. Look for it in major supermarket and chair drug stores, Target, Barnes & Noble.
Northeast FLAVOR readers are mature yet adventurous, and spend their disposable income on cooking and frequent entertaining, dining out more than once a week, and attending various regional food and wine events, according to a recent commissioned survey.
The pages of Northeast FLAVOR contain articles about hot new (and well established) chefs and restaurants, seasonal recipes using New England ingredients ranging from Gulf of Maine shrimp to pumpkin, profiles of artisinal food producers and farmers, wine & spirits, and getaway destinations.
The summer issue was released last week, and includes a salute to Julia Child (who would have turned 100 this summer) and her recipe for Lobster L'Americaine, a comparison of ice cream makers, tips on campfire cooking, summer smoothies, plus news about tequila, mussels, asparagus and more.
