Solo Bistro Of Bath, Maine, To Host German Wine Dinner

Solo Bistro, the innovative, European-style restaurant located in historic Bath, ME, welcomes autumn with a wine dinner showcasing select wines from Germany on Wednesday, September 12 at 6:30 pm. Chef Esau Crosby's five-course seasonal menu features dishes chosen specifically for each wine course.

"Germany produces excellent wines, but they're not as prevalent on wine lists as wines from other countries," said Solo Bistro owner Will Neilson. "This dinner is an opportunity for people to gain an appreciation of several German wines in one fun evening."

The dinner's wines include three whites, one red, and a dessert icewine. The Hans Wirsching Estate Sylvaner from southern Germany's Franconia region starts the evening, followed by Milz-Laurentiushof "180 Degree" Riesling and Schafer-Frolich Riesling Spatlese.

"We're excited to have two Rieslings on the menu, to showcase the fact that not all Rieslings are supersweet. Each of these wines has its own approach to the balance of sweetness and acidity that German Rieslings are all about. Being able to taste them both in one evening will allow diners to compare," said Neilson.

The Rudolph Furst Spatburgunder Pinot Noir is a German take on a grape most often associated with France or California, while the Rheinhessen Eiswein "Nachtgold" dessert wine, whose grapes are harvested while frozen, offers a unique ending to the evening.

Chef Esau Crosby enjoyed assembling this menu, and thinks guests will enjoy some of the early autumn dishes he will prepare. "Even though it's early September, the menu for this dinner is just a bit heartier and uses some different ingredients than we've been cooking with this summer," he said. Highlights include smoked salmon tartar; semolina dumplings; Savoy cabbage, onion, and bacon cake; and ragout of venison, chestnuts, and mushrooms.

For Will Neilson, this dinner is a welcome event that reminds him that cooler days, changing leaves and all of the excitement of autumn are upon us. "Having four distinct seasons is one of the great pleasures of living on the Maine coast, and I can't think of a better way to start autumn than an evening of great conversation, great food, and great wines."

About Solo Bistro: Named an "Editors' Choice" by Yankee Magazine, the Bath restaurant, launched in June 2005, is known as much for its sophisticated interior as for its flavorful menu items. In its January 2007 issue, Edible Coastal Maine wrote, "Solo Bistro is a tiny jewel of a restaurant decorated with Danish furniture and bright colors. The food is clean and simple and not too expensive." Down East agreed, referring to Solo Bistro in its May 2007 issue as "an outpost of chic sophistication on Front Street."
