Tocquevilles Boutique Winemaker Dinner Series
Winemaker Joseph Davis of Arcadian Winery will be the guest at Tocquevilles continuing series of winemaker dinners on Sunday, February 9. Each dinner features a boutique winemaker who personally crafts his wines, much as Chef Marco Moreira and Jo-Ann Makovitzkys oversee every detail of their acclaimed restaurant. For the Arcadian dinner, Chef Marco Moreira will create a seven-course menu to be matched with six wines. The first dinner of the series presented Bruce Schneider of Schneider Vineyards from Long Island's North Fork.
Joseph Davis is not only crafting some of the best wines in their categories, he is helping to define the sense of place in California vineyards. His goal is to limit yields on land that he controls, rather than purchasing grapes from growers, allowing the terroir of the wine to come through. He also picks grapes in the morning, when they are cool, and then cold soaks them for forty-eight hours to ensure that fermentation does not occur immediately. This allows for juices rich in color and tannins. The wines are then fermented in new French oak and bottled unfiltered.
Chef Moreiras menu will feature a bounty of dishes to complement the wines, including Open Faced Porcini and Lobster Ravioli, Wild Striped Bass, Scottish Pheasant Pithivier, and Roast Rack of Colorado Lamb. Wines to be poured include Chardonnay Sleepy Hollow 1999 (90+ Robert Parker), Pinot Noir Pisioni 1999 (91 Robert Parker), and Garys Vineyard Syrah 1999 (92 Robert Parker).
Dinner starts at 6:30pm with passed hors doeuvres, giving guests the opportunity to meet and chat with the winemaker. It is $175 per person, with tax and gratuity additional. Tocqueville is located at 15 East 15th Street. Reservations are required and can be made at 212-647-1515.

Upcoming winemaker dinners at Tocqueville will feature WineSmith from Napa Valley on April 6 and Andrew Will from Washington State on May 4. Tocqueville will celebrate its Third Anniversary in March 2003 with Normandy Month, featuring a special menu inspired by the restaurants namesake Alexis de Tocquevilles homeland with an American spirit. Tocquevilles wine dinners are coordinated in association with Robert Mackin of Artisan Wines.
