WCR was founded in 1993 by the late chef and author, Barbara Tropp and seven others to educate and advance women in the restaurant industry and to better the industry as a whole. As a mainspring of WCR, Tropp took her role as teacher and mentor to a very broad group of women. In the decade since its founding, WCR has seen its membership grow to more than 2000 individual and corporate members. It has played a major part in the sea change that has taken place in the industry with women now occupying half of the top slots as chefs and restaurateurs. WCR's Women Who Inspire awards are designed to inspire present and future generations of women chefs & restaurateurs.
