World-renowned Chef Seeks To Follow In Clint Eastwood's Footsteps
World-renowned restaurateur and long-time Carmel business owner Rich Pepe has declared his candidacy for Mayor in the upcoming April 2012 city election.
The picturesque, seaside village of Carmel is famous for electing Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood to the Mayor's office in the mid-1980s.
Pepe, who has lived and worked in Carmel since 1974, is a well-established figure in the community as well as an internationally-respected chef, restaurateur, and winemaker, He believes his long history of working and building successful businesses in Carmel gives him a unique advantage in being Mayor.
"I'm not a career politician. I haven't spent years in government service and I'm not looking to use this position as a stepping stone to higher office. I'm here, walking the streets of downtown, talking with the residents and business owners every day, and I have the understanding and experience to be an effective leader. I'm here for the long haul. I care about Carmel, its people, its families, and its future... It's that simple."
Pepe maintains that a "strong business background" is essential in tackling the city's fiscal issues and maintaining sound management of Carmel's financial affairs.
Part of Pepe's platform is to make Carmel "resident-friendly" just as it is "visitor-friendly."
"While tourism is and will always be the engine of our local economy, we need to remember the needs of the locals who live, work and play here. Are we looking out for them?"
He believes city residents are looking for creative solutions to long-standing issues such as traffic, parking, and ensuring a stable water supply.
Pepe's Carmel businesses include Little Napoli Bistro, Vesuvio Restaurant, Carmel Bakery, Pepe Winery, and Vino Napoli Wine Bar.
